I literally couldn’t sleep the night before my visit to Canyon Ranch. Like any good spa junkie, I was well aware of the spa and fitness resort’s reputation and, ironically enough, I was so excited at the thought of spending a relaxing weekend being pampered that I just couldn’t settle myself down. This made rising at the crack of dawn to catch a 7:30am flight out of LAX challenging, but I was determined to arrive in Tucson as early as possible to make the most of my two-day wellness getaway.
And it’s a good thing I did. Upon arrival, a Canyon Ranch representative met me at the airport and gave me a pamphlet detailing the activities, workshops and fitness classes offered that weekend. With up to five classes to choose from at any given hour of the day, I had to focus, and eventually sketched out a moderate fitness schedule with a concentration on yoga, stretching, walking and cycling. I had also scheduled three spa treatments ahead of time: Energy Renewal, Watsu and a Grapeseed body scrub. More on those later…
Located just outside of Tucson, the sprawling Canyon Ranch property integrates beautifully into the surrounding desert. Low-slung adobe buildings are designed to keep out the heat and don’t inhibit views of stunning desert sunsets, and the walking paths are well shaded and punctuated by lovely sculptures and fountains. My room was as big a one-bedroom apartment and boasted two flat-screen TVs (The resort’s DVD library has hundreds of titles to choose from) and - most important - a big, ultra-comfy bed. After a quick nap, I headed to the dining room for lunch.
I could go on and on about the food at Canyon Ranch because it’s incredible. Breakfast, lunch and dinner every day provided an ample selection of fresh, healthy, beautifully prepared cuisine (with detailed nutritional and caloric info provided, for those guests with weight loss goals). It was incredibly liberating to not have to think twice about meal planning or preparation during my stay. The kitchen even offers tasty, nutrient-rich “snacks to go” for between-meal noshing.
When I wasn’t eating, I attended fitness classes led by friendly and extremely knowledgeable instructors – the popular women’s stretch class, in particular, turned me into butter. I also wandered the walking paths, jogged through the desert and meditated in front of burbling fountains. Between sleeping well, eating right and getting ample exercise, I already felt so amazing that the spa treatments I’d scheduled seemed almost superfluous. That said, they were fantastic. My Energy Renewal treatment brought me to a state of deep meditation and left me feeling superbly balanced. Watsu - a sort of massage “dance” in which your therapist gracefully manipulates your body in a pool of warm water - was deeply relaxing (although I got a little motion sick toward the end). And my Grapeseed body scrub left my skin deliciously smooth. I may not have needed those treatments, but I sure enjoyed them. Of course, the very best thing I got out of my trip to Canyon Ranch was a renewed commitment to healthy living.
All this nurturing, pampering and hospitality doesn’t come cheap. All-inclusive, four-night packages at Canyon Ranch start at between $3000 and $4000. Fortunately, group packages bring the cost down considerably, and the resort regularly offers discounted promotions.
